Das ist DARIAH-DE
DARIAH-DE
DARIAH-DE (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) is an initiative to create a digital research infrastructure for the humanities and cultural studies. For that purpose, DARIAH-DE supports research in the humanities and cultural studies that works with digital methods and procedures with a research infrastructure consisting of four pillars:
- Teaching
- Research
- Research Data
- Technical components.
Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the partners involved in DARIAH-DE have established a digital and distributed research infrastructure with diverse services for the humanities and cultural studies in three funding phases from March 2011 to February 2019. 16 national partners as well as other Memorandum-of-Understanding partners have transferred the basic services underlying the infrastructure into sustainable continuous operation within the framework of the DARIAH-DE operational cooperation (March 2019 to February 2021). The operational cooperation was an integral part of the BMBF-funded collaborative project CLARIAH-DE (March 2019 to September 2021), which combined the different services of the two initiatives CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE into a shared digital infrastructure. DARIAH-DE will be continued in the association "Geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschungsinfrastrukturen e.V." as a transformation of TextGrid e.V.. Various parts of the DARIAH-DE offerings are also anchored in the NFDI initiatives Text+, NFDI4Culture, NFDI4Memory and NFDI4Objects.

DARIAH-DE shares the vision of creating a space for data-driven research for the humanities and cultural studies in Germany and Europe. The collaboration of research institutions and universities with computing centers and libraries opens up a unique opportunity for new ways of collaboration and research in the humanities and cultural studies.
Research infrastructures are constantly evolving. Digitization is increasingly boosting the need to explore new directions alongside traditional research paths in the humanities and cultural studies. We support researchers and service providers facing new demands by empowering stronger networks of scholars, computer scientists and information scientists.
By developing a modern research infrastructure for the humanities and cultural sciences, DARIAH-DE works towards their competitiveness and connectivity in the digital era, so that the vision of cooperative and data-driven research can be realized and new opportunities for collaboration and research are created.
The governance structure of DARIAH-DE is mainly based on three bodies::
-
The DARIAH Steering Committee is the shared central decision-making body of all active DARIAH-DE partners
-
The DARIAH-DE Coordination Office coordinates DARIAH-DE as national node of DARIAH-ERIC and is located at the Göttingen State and University Library of Lower Saxony
-
DARIAH-DE is part of the association "Geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschungsinfrastrukturen e.V.": According to the statutes of the association, the "national nodes to European research infrastructures in the humanities" are coordinated there. As national node for European research infrastructures in the humanities, DARIAH-DE's services are part of the association's catalog of services and jointly supervised by the association's Coordination Council (cf. § 11 of the association's statutes).
Trust in digital research infrastructures is the basic prerequisite for its use and also forms the basis for the cultural shift towards FAIR principles and Open Access. Such trust is significantly strengthened by the sustainability factor.
CLARIAH-DE, as a merger of the two established research infrastructures CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE, created a sustainable structure for the humanities and cultural studies communities. To this end, a sustainability strategy was formulated that promotes and increases the further development and networking of research infrastructures in the humanities and cultural sciences in Germany and Europe. In order to achieve this goal, CLARIAH-DE, together with its partners and other interested parties, initiated an association transformation based on the already existing association TextGrid e.V. The legal form of an association offers the advantage of enabling the greatest possible participation of those using and offering the services as well as interdisciplinary and international participation.
Information on the structure of the association as well as on membership is provided on the website of the association: Geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschungsinfrastrukturen e.V.
